Where to Find Staurolite in North Carolina

North Carolina staurolite is the famous "fairy stone" of the Piedmont and Blue Ridge metamorphic belt. Franklin, Stokes, and Surry counties along the Virginia line yield well-formed twin crosses (cruciform staurolite) in mica schist saprolite, and the Pickaway and Fancy Gap areas straddle the same belt across the state line. Brown to reddish-brown crystals up to three centimeters are common, and the twin cross (sixty- and ninety-degree variants) is the prized form. Most field staurolite weathers out of saprolite clay; specimens clean up with a soft brush after a soak. The most productive ground is in Franklin County saprolite (NC-VA line), Stokes County schist belt, Surry County roadcuts.

Casual hand collection of common rocks and minerals like staurolite is allowed on most BLM and U.S. Forest Service land in North Carolina, with daily and annual limits set by the local field office. National parks, most state parks, and tribal land are off-limits. Always confirm rules before a trip.

Franklin County saprolite (NC-VA line) is the standout. Other strong ground includes Stokes County schist belt, Surry County roadcuts. Fairy stones are the cross-shaped twin form. Single, prismatic staurolite crystals are far more common and equally valid as specimens; the twins are the prize.
